    What Shopify really costs

Shopify's pricing has two parts that new merchants consistently underestimate: the subscription and the per-transaction fees. The subscription is the smaller number on the pricing page. The transaction fees, a percentage of every sale plus a fixed per-order fee, are where the real money goes, and they depend on your plan, your payment processor, and your average order value.

The plan ladder is simple. Basic at $39/month is for new stores. Grow at $105/month, the plan formerly called Shopify, renamed in 2026 with no price change, adds staff accounts, professional reports, and lower rates. Advanced at $399/month is for high-volume stores, with the lowest card rates and a custom report builder. Annual billing cuts each by about 25%, which is the easiest saving available on the platform.

The fee that decides your plan is the card rate. On a $50 order, Basic takes $1.75 (3.5%), Grow takes $1.65, Advanced takes $1.55. The 30-cent fixed fee means small orders lose a bigger share, which is why stores with low average order values feel fees more. And the third-party gateway surcharge is the trap: 2% on Basic means a store doing $20,000/month through an external gateway pays $400/month extra just for not using Shopify Payments.
